Over 40 top international and Romanian music professionals and music icons share their expertise at East European Music Conference online camp 2021

In a Europe still affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, with a cultural industry in standby, heavily impacted by unpredictability, professionals working in events and in the cultural industry feel an urgent need of defined support measures, of discussions aimed to shaping real solutions and of professional know-how infusion and practical advice meant to help them pass through these unprecedented times and see possible future steps for functioning in the „new normal”.

To support them, on 10th and 11th of December 2021, the East European Music Conference online camp’s guests will discuss about the most stringent music industry issues, sharing their expertise and answering to music professionals’ and cultural operators’ questions during a series of interactive panels which will be broadcasted online, for free, on eemusic.ro and on the East European Music Conference Facebook page.

The online edition will include 8 discussion panels with European and Romanian experts, 13 interviews with icons of the international music industry, like Tuomas Holopainen (composer and founder of Nightwish band) or Ed Bicknell (Dire Straits manager and Managing Director at DAMAGE MGMT).

They will be joined by officials from Romanian authorities and local cultural and events industry like: Alexandra-Maria Rigler (Director of Centre for Projects from Timisoara), Radu Burnete (Executive Director, CONCORDIA Confederation), Bogdan Ștefan Trîmbaciu (Director of the Project Management Unit – Ministry of Culture), Andi Mitroi (Cofounder of Summer Well Festival), Alin Vaida (Manager „Jazz in The Park” festival and Executive Director at FAPTE), Iulia Popovici (performing arts critic and curator), members of Romanian festivals, officials from Bucharest and Cluj Mayoralties and theater and cultural managers.

During the two full days of debates, experts will discuss on topics like „The cultural future of Europe” still under Covid-19 pandemic’s mark, about the national „Recovery and resilience plans” which EU member countries submitted for approval and how do the UE member countries elaborate a successful long term cultural strategy valid in the post – pandemic context, about „European financing sources for the cultural industry”, about „The “normal” and the “new normal” in the international events” (about characteristics, communities, about how do event bookers find artists/ music products fit for their specific events, about sustainable cultural strategies for festivals or for other cultural products) or about the new measures, norms, event production and crowd management models generated/ enforced by the post-pandemic context.

The live transmission of the online event will take place on 10th and 11th of December 2021 on eemusic.ro and on the East European Music Conference Facebook page, with free access.

Romanian Music Export, the first Romanian music and promotion program will host its first online edition on January 31st, 2021

After a year devoid of events, with a wounded cultural sector and with still unclear perspectives for 2021, professionals in the music and entertainment industry in Romania find themselves looking for guidance, solutions and meetings to face current and future challenges. In this context, Romanian Music Export, the first local program from the entrepreneurial area which assumes the mission of promoting and exporting music at the European level, will host on January 31st 2021 Romanian Music Export Online. The event borrows the format of a TV show, including live and recorded panel discussions with local and foreign speakers, relevant for the industry and a series of showcases with Romanian bands.

Support for up-and-coming Romanian artists, locally and internationally

Romanian Music Export was developed in order to work as a promotional program in order to identify and support new Romanian artists, but also to help them in developing a national and international career. RME offers a stage for new voices, through the platform that brings together young artists, professionals in the music industry, festival directors and audience, with the strong belief that music is the universal glue that brings together, heals and motivates.

Romanian Music Export was borne during the second edition of East European Music Conference, on July 26, 2018, an event where producers, booking agents, promoters and cultural operators in Romania and Europe took part at the show of five Romanian bands, whose selection was made after a sign-up on the platform especially built for this program.

Any band in Romania could have signed-up, provided their songs were original pieces. The jury was two-folded, the preselection was done locally, while the final selection of the five bands was done by an international jury. 71 artists joined the competition and bands like Am Fost La Munte Si Mi-a Placut, Gramofone, JazzyBIT, NEXT EX and White Walls held amazing shows while during the breaks answered questions from the press and booking agents from big European festivals.

Romanian Music Export Online levels the field for future offline events.

The January 31st edition is essential for continuing the Romanian Music Export program, in order to make the offline 2021 edition possible, since the unprecedented situation created by the coronavirus pandemic forced the cancellation, postponement or turning to online of all events and cultural activities. The digital platform RME is created for Romanian artists, especially up-and-coming with a vital need of guidance and support in this time with no concerts and no payments and in a constant need or partners with whom to talk about solutions for rebuilding their careers in the near future.

The online event will host 10 panels of discussions like: “Can music help us thrive?”, “Health & Safety post pandemic events reopening”, “Freelance musician or artist. Can it be done?”, “Solutions from the music industry for reopening the cultural live”, “How do festival bookers choose newcomers for their line-up?”, “The future of clubs and small concert venues” and “Women in music industry”.

The speaker list includes: Fruzsina Szép (Director, Superbloom Festival – Germania), Greg Parmley (International Director Live Music Conference & International Festival Forum, UK), Michal Kascak (Founder / CEO – Pohoda festival, Slovacia), Christof Huber (Director, Yourope – European Festival Association Switzerland), Baris Basaran (Promoter / Head of Eastern & Central Europe – TEG / MJR – UK), , Lina Ugrinovska (International Booking / Password Production, North Macedonia), representatives of European festivals Summerbreeze Open Air (Germania), Wide Days (Scotland), Nova Rock (Austria), but also local representatives (ARTmania, Untold, Electric Castle, Summerwell, Jazz in the Park), as well as representatives from Ministry of Culture, club venues (Quantic, Rockstadt, Form Space, Club Control, Expirat), cultural and theatre managers, Romanian artists and representatives of booking and management companies. East European Music Conference 2019 starts

East European Music Conference, the meeting point of international and local music specialists, opens for a new edition.

The third edition of East European Music Conference & Showcase Festival (EEMC), the first local international conference dedicated to professionals in the music industry opens its doors between 25 – 27 July, 2019, in order to become the meeting and talking point between Romanian music industry and cultural operators and some of the best experts in the area. EEMC is where artists, managers, producers and cultural operators in Romania have the chance to initiate collaborations with the special guests at the conference.

Seminars and talks will take place at the Hermes House/ ASTRA Museum in Sibiu and at Habitus Gallery, being rounded by a series of concerts under the Romanian Music Export brand and alternative events organized in the Small Square.

The Sibiu conference is organized in collaboration with AROC, the Romanian Association of Concerts and Cultural Events Organizers, that features as founding members some if the most important promoters in Romania: Emagic, Electric Castle, Summerwell, ARTMania or Untold, among others. EEMC is a project supported by Kaufland Romania.

“SIBIU – Festival City – East European Music Conference & Showcase Festival 2019” is a co-financed action by the City Hall of Sibiu and the District Council of Sibiu.

“SIBIU – Festival City” is a multicultural project with the object of reconfirming the status of the town of Sibiu as an important player on the European market of culture consumers and producers of cultural events. With a remarkable tradition and experience in organizing and promoting large events, Sibiu becomes the regional platform for dialog for all the entities involved in the showbiz industry, not only in Romania, but also in Europe, and takes on the role of promoter in attracting international investments, with a direct impact on citizens and local authorities.

With its third edition, that will take place between 25-27 July, 2019, the international reunion East European Music Conference (EEMC) has taken on the mission of keeping a healthy debate between the entities that are active in the Romanian Musical industry, starting with representatives of the private sector – show organizers, to international experts and directly involved state authorities in decision making processes.

The third edition of East European Music Conference and Showcase Festival (EEMC), the first local international conference dedicated to professionals in the music industry, opens its gates on July 25-27, 2019, becoming the meeting and talking point of the Romanian musical industry and cultural workers with some of the best experts in the field.

In the context of a market in a continuous development process in the last couple of years, the local promoters are still conducting business in a confused environment, with an outdated legislation, that does not include specific provisions for the concert and festival industry, therefore the existence of a communication platform that facilitates the direct contact and punctual troubleshooting is necessary. The local organizers will look for solutions in an experience exchange with local and international promoters. Without significant change to the existing laws in Romania, without changes in laws as result of healthy debates there can be no rapid or healthy changes in the local market. The mission EEMC has taken on long term is to support the evolution of the local live event sector and alignment with the European industry standard on festivals and concerts.

East European Music Conference takes place at the same time as the ARTmania Festival (14th edition) thus contributing to the transformation of Sibiu, through music and art in a veritable European Cultural Capital.

On the large stage of the ARTmania Festival, some of the most important international bands will play: Dream Theater (USA), Opeht (Sweden), Architechs (UK), Madrugada (Norway), Alcest (France), Wardruna (Norway), Fjørt (Germany) and Mobius (Slovakia).

East European Music Conference 2018 has started in Sibiu

Romanian Music Export, the first program from the private sector promoting and exporting music at a European level was launched last night in the presence of international East European Music Conference delegates, band guests and ARTmania Festival friends.

The event included a show by five Romanian bands Am Fost La Munte Și Mi-a Plăcut, Gramofone, JazzyBIT, NEXT EX and White Walls. These bands performed excellent and during the breaks they’ve answered questions from the press and booking agents from the largest European festivals.

Today, 27 July, at 11:00 the first day of the East European Music Conference began, with conversations about the music industry in a world in crisis, where Ivan Milivojev (Exit Festival), Nick Hobbs (Charmenko), Albert Juncosa (Mad Cool Festival), Guido Janssens (Emagic/AROC), Jan Quiel (Seaside Touring / Wacken Open Air) were present with Holger Jan Schmidt (Yourope /Take a stand/ Co-founder, Go GrouP – Green operations Europe, Germany) moderating the panel. EEMC continues tomorrow with pressing subjects no only for the musical area but also to what cultural management at a European level means.

Today, the ARTmania Festival also starts, its 13th edition bringing in the medieval citadel of Sibiu some of the best-known artist of the moment. Mogwai, Steven Wilson, Leprous, HAKEN, Zeal&Ardor, Rome, Arcane Roots și Distorted Harmony are this year’s line-up.

East European Music Conference and Sibiu Sounds Festival supports musicians and bands from Sibiu

Following the Sibiu Sounds Festival event, where 87 artists had the opportunity of making themselves known to the public with original songs, a new opportunity is offered to bands in Sibiu though the partnership between Sibiu Sounds – a platform that aims to support local artists, to create a community support movement for the local music scene – and East European Music Conference, the most important conference dedicated to the musical industry in Romania.

Therefore, members of young bands, local independent, creative and active artists, known or less known from Sibiu will have free access to the EEMC conference and the possibility of buying a ticket to the ARTMania Festival (July 27-28, Large Square, Sibiu) for a special price of 110 for both concert days.

The conference will take place at the Thalia Hall in Sibiu between 27– 28 July.

East European Music Conference reunites representatives of large European festivals (Mad Cool Festival, Exit Festival, Roskilde Festival among others), producers and managers in the European musical industry, in a unique event in the Romanian space. EEMC is the place where artists, managers, producers and cultural operators in Romania have the opportunity of meeting and starting new collaborations with the special guests present at the conference.

First confirmations for EEMC 2018

Ivan Milivojev (founder Exit Festival), Nick Hobbs (founder Charmenko), Albert Juncosa (booker for Mad Cool Festival) Jake Beaumont-Nesbitt (counsellor IMMF) and Greg Parmley (Managing Director ILMC), along with other promoters, managers and event organizers in Europe are coming to Romania, at Thalia Hall in Sibiu for the second edition of East European Music Conference (July 27-28).

Ivan Milivojev, Nick Hobbs, Greg Parmley si Jake Beaumont-Nesbitt have confirmed their presence at the most important conference dedicated to the music industry in Romania. They will be joined by Holger Jan Schmidt, Albert Juncosa, Manfred Tari, Gordon Masson and Allan McGowan.

Ivan Milivojev is one of the founders of several festivals in Serbia and region, EXIT festival (Serbia, 2000), Warriors Dance Festival (Serbia, 2012), Sea Dance Festival (Montenegro, 2014), R:EVOL:UTION festival (Romania, 2015) and amazing art festival #DEV9T (Serbia, 2015). Fifteen years of festival experience along with projects such as Die Antwoord, Juan Atkins and Philharmonic Orchestra, Robbie Williams, RHCP, Franz Ferdinand , Madonna, The Chemical Brothers, Manu Chao, Gentleman, ZAZ, Cheikh Lo, The Prodigy and many other are certain proof of professionalism and quality.

Nick Hobbs is the owner of Charmenko, Charmworks & Charm Music Poland, & co-owner of Charm Music Czechia. He’s an independent promoter and talent buyer for festivals and venues who’s been specialized in Eastern Europe & the Middle East since the early 80’s. The artist agency, Charmworks, has an eclectic roster and works everywhere in Europe and beyond, especially representing exceptional artists from Eastern Europe, the Balkans and the Middle East.

Jake Beaumont-Nesbitt is the Policy Advisor to The International Music Managers Forum (IMMF), an organization that brings together artist representatives associations from 24 countries. It represents managers and the artists they work for to create better trading conditions for creators through networking, sharing, and discussions. Jake also works as a rights specialist for a selection of recording artists and music copyrights.

Greg Parmley is the General Manager of the International Music Conference (ILMC) and has been involved in the international music industry for over two decades, taking on important missions. He started being a publisher of IQ Magazine, or for eight years he was the director of ILMC’s media department. Starting in 2015, he launched the International Festival Forum, a large annual event, for agents and other types of experts involved in the festival industry.

After a first edition when over 400 people – guests and public – from the Romanian and European cultural medium, have exchanged ideas and reached conclusions, and the second edition continues the innovation in the Romanian market of such events with another avantgarde program: Romanian Music Export, which will be officially launched on July 26^th.

On April 30^th the registrations for the showcase scheduled for July 26^th in Sibiu closed. Over 80 bands are now being analyzed by the national jury of Romanian Music Export and on May 18 the 30 bands going further for evaluation from the international jury will be announced.

Call for bands: Register your band for Romanian Music Export!

The first Romanian music export in the entrepreneurial area announces its call for music fans, who play either solo or in a band.

Romanian Music Export, whose launch event will take in Sibiu, on July 27, at the East European Music Conference, will put five Romanian artists/bands face to face with promoters, producers, managers and booking agents from the European musical industry. Any band in Romania can sing up, provided their music is an original creation.

The artist selection will be done in two stages. During the first stage, a jury made out of producers, journalists, representatives of festivals and concert venues in Romania will make a short list for the second stage, when an international jury will chοose the five bands that will play on July 26, in Sibiu.

Bogdan Serban – Radio Guerrilla, Mihai Tița – journalist, Mihai Dinu – eclecticfm.ro, Norbert Tako – PLAI Festival, Andi Vanca – Electric Castle, Guido Janssens – Emagic, Dudu Radoslav – Made In TM, Andrei Coste – Stereo Beasts, Ioana Moldoveanu – Local Rec, Florin Oslobanu – Club Control, Teodor Negrea – Form Space and Ștefan Zaharescu – Rockstadt are the 12 jurors in the national jury for Romanian Music Export.

The deadline is April 30, 2018. The short list from the local jury will be announced on May 18, 2018. The final list, selected by the international jury, will be announced on June 7, 2018.

Tickets are already available online for 190 lei for the three days. One ticket grants access to Romanian Music Export Showcase and days 1 & 2 of EEMC. Buying an EEMC tickets offers the possibility of buying an ARTmania Festival ticket at the special price of 110 for the two festival days.

East European Music Conference launches Romanian Music Export

The most important conference dedicated to the musical industry in Romanian is getting ready for its 2018 version, at the Thalia Hall in Sibiu, between July, 26-28. After a first edition when over 400 people – guests and public – from the Romanian and European cultural medium, have exchanged ideas and reached conclusions, and the second edition continues the innovation in the Romanian market of such events with another avantgarde program: Romanian Music Export.

Therefore, the first Romanian program in the entrepreneurial area which takes on the promotion and exporting at a European level, will start with the second edition of EEMC and will be available for all the guests and public of the conference. On July 26, producers, booking agents, promoters and cultural operators in Romania and Europe will take part in a show of five local bands, whose selection will be made after a signing-up on a platform especially designed for this program. Any band in Romania will be able to sign up, the one condition being playing original songs. The selection will be done in two stages, the selection being done first locally, while the final selection of the five bands will be done by an international jury.

“Romanian Music Export is a platform that is missing from the Romanian musical industry. There are many European countries that have such a program, supported by laws and cultural policies, who offer financing, support and recognition to young talents, but who are completely missing in Romania. It is very important to understand that only together, in a coherent and united way, we can open the gate for Romanian musical projects in the international market, it is the right step in an industry that has faced a huge growth in the last couple of years, that has no real policies. We do everything here, in Sibiu, a town that can be called a capital of European cultural avantgarde, said Codruta Vulcu, organizer and founder of EEMC and Romanian Music Export.

East European Music Conference reunites representatives of large European festivals (Mad Cool Festival, Exit Festival, Roskilde Festival among others), producers and managers in the European musical industry, in a unique event in the Romanian space. EEMC is the place where artists, managers, producers and cultural operators in Romania have the opportunity of meeting and starting new collaborations with the special guests present at the conference.

Present on the short nominee list at the European Festival Awards 2017 (Promoter of the Year), EEMC had received, after its first edition, appreciations from a jury formed by the most important people in the European industry, confirming the value and utility of such an even in Romania. Also, on the short list nominees was Codruta Vulcu, for the excellence and passion award handed out each year by the EFA.

“It was huge honour for us such a nominalization, just after the first edition of the conference. The need for such an event was confirmed by the enthusiasm with which the participants and the guests received the talks during the conference, and the European music industry’ s support it so much more valuable as Romania needs more meetings of this kind in order to identify what we are missing to have a competitive industry” , adds Codruta Vulcu, organizer and founder of EEMC and Romanian Music Export.

The Deep Sound of Maramures premiers in Sibiu at the East European Music Conference Gala

The old sounds of Maramures, discovered by an anthropologist and electro reinvented in the purest contemporary sound, from Ambiental to trance, will be heard in the Large Square in Sibiu, Thursday, July 27^th, from 22:00, in the opening of the Sibiu Festival City: East European Music Conference program.

The Deep Sound of Maramures project is an academic experiment, translated into music, applauded in Paris and The Hague and will b presented for the first time in Sibiu during the free concert series that will mark the reunion of European music industry representatives in Romania. Joining this show, with an amazing video performance, will be Cinty Ionescu, an artist who projects micro and macro universes, made-up worlds that potent or counterpoint the music. The Deep Sound of Maramures and Cinty Ionescu will triumphally close a gala evening in which other concerts from international artists are scheduled: the Dutch band My Baby and the Brit Alex Clare.

Age-long beats, mysterious, carrying though time their full of force messages are gliding in in rounds of progressive trance or psy, just to get lost in an ambient of sequences of acoustic piano or experimental electro-dance. The Deep Sound of Maramures, a premiere project for The Hague and appreciated in Paris or in transmissions for London and New York universities, proposes a hybrid interdisciplinary approach, being a new way of presenting some academic studies: selected from the infinite array of possible natural sounds, the sounds gain new understandings, finding an unexpected spot in the most available area of the acoustic area: music. Project or promoting regions through culture, The Deep Sound of Maramures proposes a new concept that combines multiple elements, from the audiovisual show to documentary movies sequences and e ethno-anthropological research about the old culture of Maramures. The show includes interventions from reputed ethnologic artists, like the instrument player Stefan Andreica from Viseul de sus or the dancers of “Ansamblul Maramuresului” lead by PhD Anuta Pop.

The Deep Sound of Maramures project fascinates firstly because it represents an extraordinary bridge between tradition and innovation. The sounds, made by traditional instruments are processed and transformed, lead towards their modern correspondents, created with the help of the newest technologies, all this included in an avant-garde performance, innovative and interactive. The chemistry created between all these components is hypnotizing, and Peter gate has an unwonted and creative artistic approach.

After they have presented this project in Bucharest, in a partnership with Taiwanese researcher Jia-Rey (Gary) Chang, PhD in interactive architectural design, famous, among others, for a remarkable presentations at the Mercedes Benz Amsterdam Fashion Week 2016, The Deep Sound of Maramures comes to Sibiu with Cinty Ionescu, artist interested in video experiments and interdisciplinary hybrid collaborations. Awarded an excellence award for video design by Fringe New York City, Cinty Ionescu has signed visual avant-garde installations for projects hosted by the Romanian Cultural Centre in New York or different theatres or exhibition spaces in Europe.

European experts fight terrorism at large-scale events

The Secretary of State for the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Head of the Emergency Situation Department, Dr Raed Arafat, and Chris Kemp, advisor to the British Police Force, will be amongst the those loaning their expertise at the Crisis Situations at Festivals & Events session during the forthcoming East European Music Conference (EEMC).

The session, which will take place 28 July at 14:45 in the Thalia Hall in Sibiu, Romania, will address the pressing issue of terrorist threats, in light of the recent attacks on live music venues across Europe, along with inclement weather, last-minute matters relating to organisational licences, and other emergency situations.

The session will be moderated by journalist Florin Ghioca (Adevarul, Romania) and will welcome expertise from Dr Raed Arafat, Secretary of State and President of the Emergency Department at the Ministry of Internal Affairs (Romania); Stephan Thanscheidt, CEO of FKP Scorpio (Germany) – the largest festival producer in Europe; Thomas Zsifkovits – co-owner of Barracuda Music (Austria) and organiser of the renowned Nova Rock Festival; and Chris Kemp, PhD, crowd expert for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games (UK).

The aim of the session is to examine large-scale event management, and how as venues, festival owners and event organisers, we can better prepare ourselves for terrorist threats or any other type of emergency situation that might arise. The session will also touch on other major issues faced by the live music and event industry, and will include: how event organisers can prepare for unpredictable situations, risk management in extreme circumstances, constructive dialogue between organisers and local authorities, development of existing services, and the proactive establishment of a campaign that educates those working in the live music and events industry for the purpose of promoting appropriate behaviour in critical situations. It is of the utmost importance that an initiative group be created following the conference, that will implement and monitor a series of concrete actions that will make a positive impact on the industry and will enable us to maintain an ongoing dialogue amongst all stakeholders.

The topic of crisis and emergency situation response during public events is a major topic for concern in a continuously changing Europe. Since the Colectiv nightclub tragedy in Bucharest in 2015, in which a deadly fire engulfed the premises, claiming 64 lives, Romania has closely examined flaws in its system and modified its current legislation in order to better protect audiences, artists, and all those involved with venues and events. Now more than ever, the theme of extreme situation management for the safety of everyone has never been more important.

The EEMC’s mission is to identify solutions with respect to the long-term development of cultural and creative industries in Romania. It will do so by inviting luminaries from the greater European live music industry in order to participate in ten distinct sessions.

“Across Europe members of the European Event Safety Group work with local, regional and national authorities advising them on recent changes at events, providing expert practitioner advice to the police, fire and paramedic services and ensuring interoperability in working practices. Members of the group have worked with the authorities on major disaster reports, creating new legislation and advising on major music and sporting events such as the Olympic, Paralympic and Commonwealth Games, the Tour de France and major football championships such as The World Cup and European Championships. Members also sit on Government bodies advising on health, safety, security and crowd management. It is the ability to work together on such high-profile issues that helps the team to deliver current knowledge to our partners across Europe.”
